City in the Spotlight: Utrecht

In the second quarter of 2024, the crowds in Utrecht's shopping streets have significantly increased, contrasting with the national trend. In this article, we delve deeper into the numbers for the Domstad.

Utrecht has positioned itself as one of the busiest cities in the Netherlands in 2024, showing a 6.3% increase compared to last year. Nationally, however, this crowd density decreased by 5.9% during the same period. Utrecht was also notably busier than the largest cities in the Netherlands—Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague—by 11% from week 16 onward.

King's Day marked the highest peak of crowding in Utrecht this year, followed by a busy month in May, with Saturday, May 18, being the busiest day in the city center. This was the Saturday after Ascension Day. The good weather, perfect for shopping and dining out, undoubtedly contributed to this surge in activity. On May 4th, there was also significant activity in the city center due to Remembrance Day and events on the Domplein, as reflected in the crowd numbers.
