In 2023, Alkmaar perfectly fits the profile of a medium-sized city. When compared to other cities with a similar number of inhabitants, the overall congestion index up until week 48 differs by just 1%. However, Alkmaar is no ordinary city. While the center was quite calm at the start of 2023, from mid-April to early October, its congestion level consistently exceeded that of other medium-sized cities, particularly during the busy summer months. So, what makes it so crowded during this period?
Alkmaar has long been known as "the cheese city," and its weekly cheese market on Fridays makes it an attractive destination for tourists. The cheese market runs from the last Friday of March to the last Friday of September, perfectly coinciding with the period when Alkmaar is bustling. But is this increased foot traffic solely due to the cheese market?
When looking at the distribution of congestion per weekday during the cheese market period compared to the period without the cheese market, a clear difference is visible. The cheese market draws many visitors, as Friday sees a 5% higher share of weekly traffic. This extra congestion comes at the expense of the weekend, as Saturday and Sunday together lose 5 percentage points.
Of course, multiple factors contribute to the increased traffic in Alkmaar from April to October. In addition to the draw of the cheese market, Alkmaar is also close to the coast, with popular vacation spots like Bergen and Egmond nearby. Alkmaar serves as an ideal location for tourists to visit during the day or enjoy an evening meal.
While one might assume this trend has been consistent for years, a comparison with last year shows a significantly larger difference in congestion between the warmer and colder months. In 2022, the difference in traffic between the period from April to September and the other months was 136%, but in 2023, this gap widened to 163%. Alkmaar seems to be increasingly becoming a tourist city. Will this trend continue?
